Milano Marittima
Mare d'Arte Festival (Sea of Art Festival)
Milano Marittima and Milan ideally come together once again through art and culture with the 2026 edition of the Mare d’Arte Festival, taking place from July 3rd to July 12th in the Romagna seaside town. Bridging the two cities is an extraordinary figure in Italian history, Giuseppe Palanti (1881–1946): an artist, costume designer for La Scala Theatre, professor and Vice President of the Brera Academy, as well as a Milanese designer and urban planner. It was Palanti who conceived and designed the garden city of Milano Marittima, defining its landscape and architectural identity and celebrating its sea, pine forest, Borgo Marina, and the Cervia canal harbor—with its traditional sails and fishermen—through his paintings.
In 2026, the year marking the eightieth anniversary of his passing and the establishment of the Fondazione Palanti Romussi ETS, the Mare d’Arte Festival strengthens the dialogue between the two cities and their shared cultural heritage. The program centers on the power of art to forge connections between different territories, communities, and visions. This bond is further reinforced by the presence of Tommaso Sacchi, Councillor for Culture of the Municipality of Milan, a long-time advocate of the strategic value of culture and the author of a vision that the Mare d’Arte Festival has embraced: "Daring with culture is a winning endeavor."
This year’s edition consolidates a cultural model based on the creation of works designed to endure over time. The Mare d’Arte festival does not exhaust itself within its temporary timeframe; rather, it produces content, works, and materials that become a permanent part of the public heritage, transforming Milano Marittima into a "diffused museum" where art, nature, and architecture intertwine.
Programme
Thursday, September 3rd – September 20th
Sala Rubicone, Cervia (Ravenna)
Curated by Professor Anna Villari, the exhibition will present to the public a significant collection of previously unseen works dedicated to the Cervia area. These will be accompanied by documentary and design materials recently discovered following a reorganization of the artist's studio in Milan, which will provide deeper insight into Palanti’s role in the design and representation of the landscape of Cervia and Milano Marittima.
