Cervia, Milano Marittima, Pinarella, Tagliata
Cervia Garden City
From spring to autumn, the green spaces of Cervia, Milano Marittima, Pinarella, and Tagliata are transformed by spectacular botanical and floral displays. On the occasion of Cervia Città Giardino (Cervia Garden City), the urban landscape turns into a mosaic of scents and colours, bound to amaze both residents and tourists alike. Under the slogan "Flowers of freedom, roots of hope", the aim is to translate the core principles of democracy into a visual representation, harnessing the communicative and universal power of nature.
Among the highlights of this edition, two events hold great symbolic value: the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the twinning between Cervia and the Polish city of Jelenia Góra the guest of honour at the Sposalizio del Mare (Marriage of the Sea) and the presence of three Canadian delegations representing the cities of Maple Ridge, Stratford, and Yarmouth. These delegations represent the international association Communities in Bloom (which recently honoured Cervia with the highest accolade in its International Challenge) and are dedicated to creating a garden in the very central Piazza Garibaldi.
The initiative originated in 1972 under the name “Maggio in Fiore,” born from an intuition by Germano Todoli and subsequently developed by his son Riccardo.
The current title was adopted in the 1990s to highlight the environmental peculiarities of the territory which, as early as the beginning of the 20th century, inspired Giuseppe Palanti in the design of a "garden city" based on the theories of the English urban planner Ebenezer Howard.
Today, Cervia Città Giardino is Europe’s largest open-air floral art exhibition and an international benchmark for architects and landscape technicians. Having successfully grown and evolved, it has transformed into a crossroads of cultures, friendships, and best practices in public green space management.
Today, it is far more than just a floral display: it is a living laboratory of ideas for the future, sending a message of sustainability and beauty that weaves through the city's streets and parks.
